1st & 2nd Week: Fugan (普願) Chris ‘CJ’ Johnson
Fugan Chris Johnson is a new member of SMZC. He is a student of Nyoze Kwong and Jakusho Kwong-roshi. He received Jukai in Suzuki-roshi’s lineage from Koshin Flint Sparks-roshi, under whose guidance Fugan has been studying and practicing since 2017. Fugan entered the Zen path in 2001 through the Kwan Um School of Zen founded by Zen Master Seung Sahn (Dae Soen Sa Nim). From his root teacher Zen Master Ji Haeng Thom Pastor, Fugan received initial precepts in 2013 and Dharma Teacher-in-Training precepts in 2015. Until recently, he has worked in the mental and behavioral health field and has introduced contemplative practices to adjudicated youth in residential treatment centers, high school students, and military and first responders. He enjoys composing and improvising on the piano, instructing and training in the martial art of jiu jitsu, and being playful. Currently based in Portland, OR with his wife Liz 'Myogetsu', they are seeking to move to CA so that Fugan can deepen his study and training at Genjo-ji.

3rd & 4th Week: Kakuryu (覚竜) Noel McKenna
Kakuryu Noel McKenna began his Dharma path in 2000 in the Tibetan tradition and was ordained in Dharamsala, India the following year. He completed the traditional Karma Kagyu Three Year Retreat in 2007 at Palpung Thubten Choling Monastery in upstate New York. While still a Tibetan monk, he pursued his emerging interest in Zen, traveling to Pioneer Valley Zendo in Charlemont, Massachusetts, sitting zazenkai and sesshin with Eishin Ikeda. Kakuryu received Jukai in 2021 from Carol Honmei Morely Sensei. He has been studying and practicing under the guidance of Jakusho Kwong-roshi and Nyoze Kwong-roshi since 2022. Kakuryu participated in the Summer Ango Sesshin in 2024, and Genjo-ji has been in his heart since. He lives in Norwood, Massachusetts with his partner Shane and cat, Junior and works as a medical assistant.
