Celebration & Sacred Milestone: Sanmon Ceremony & Summer Ango Closing

Join the sangha on Saturday, September 26, for a special day marking both the close of our Summer Ango practice period and a historic milestone in our temple's construction. We begin the morning by gathering outside the Sangha House for a procession to the Sanmon Gate. This dedicated Sanmon Ceremony marks the structural completion of our mountain gate and celebrates the installation of the ridge beam.

The Significance of the Ridge Beam Ceremony

In traditional Japanese timber framing (Jōtō-shiki or Muneage), placing the final ridge beam at the highest point of a structure is a pivotal rite. Historically performed by craftsmen, priests, and the community, this rite serves a three-fold spiritual purpose:

• Gratitude to Nature: Offering reverence to the trees and materials that form the sanctuary's structure.

• Honor for Craftsmanship: Recognizing the dedication, precision, and mindful work of the builders.
