About This Event

The Breath of the Mandala
The Tradition of Roof Tile Dedication
Imagine your name between the earth and sky, guarding a sacred space for the next three hundred years…. To sign a tile is to weave your own breath into the very bones of the temple grounds. Long after we are gone, these tiles will remain, silently embracing those who seek peace and refuge below.
The tradition of signing names on temple roof tiles is known in Japan as kawara-hōno (瓦奉納 — roof tile dedication). It is a deeply spiritual, centuries-old practice that bridges the physical act of building with the invisible current of collective devotion. In Japanese temple architecture, roof tiles (kawara) are far more than mere protection against the elements. They are the armor of the temple, historically designed with its jimon (寺紋) temple emblem to keep negative energies at bay.
